Soroptimist means “best for women” and that’s what the organization strives to achieve. Soroptimists are women at their best, working to help other women to be their best.
Throughout history and still to this day, women throughout the world face obstacles solely because of their gender. They disproportionately suffer from poverty and discrimination. It’s for this reason that Soroptimist, an organization of and by women, chooses to focus on the special challenges facing women and girls.
Soroptimists in Soroptimist International of The Sierras local club are residents of the Oakhurst Area which includes Ahwahnee, Bass Lake, Coarsegold, Oakhurst and North Fork. Oakhurst is located at the South Gates of Yosemite National Park in Central California.
Our local club is in the Sierra Pacific Region which includes over 30+ clubs and close to 1,000 members located from the coast to the valley from San Francisco to San Luis Obispo from Los Banos, Patterson to Carmel to Twain Harte and Mariposa. In addition to providing women and girls with access to an education, these clubs and our members also participate in the global organization-wide programs.
Soroptimist International of the Americas has 30,000 members and is one of the four federations in Soroptimist International and has nearly 1,300 clubs in 20 countries and territories who work to improve the lives of women and girls. Soroptimist clubs receive assistance in their volunteer efforts by participating locally in programs developed and sponsored by the Soroptimist organization.
